President Mahama activates waste transfer stations in Ghana's post‑flood clean‑up

President John Dramani Mahama ordered the immediate opening of six waste‑transfer stations across the Greater Accra Region that had been built but left unused. The stations at Achimota, Teshie, Kpone, Ashaiman, Pantang and Adipa will allow tricycle waste collectors and other operators to deposit refuse close to their routes, cutting travel costs and speeding disposal.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited mobilised about 2,000 personnel, tractors, backhoes, compaction trucks, road sweepers and three hundred heavy‑haulage vehicles to support the two‑day National General Cleaning Exercise that began on 10 July 2026. Over 150 haulage trucks, 30 compactors and more than 2,000 tricycle operators were deployed nationwide to desilt drains, clear debris and transport waste to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) and the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP).

Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi warned that the two‑day effort would not be sufficient to remediate the flood‑induced waste, calling for a sustained post‑exercise response overseen by the Post‑Flood Coordinating Team. Various public and private entities—including the Ghana Gold Board, local assemblies and the military—joined the operation, emphasizing the need for continued sanitation to prevent future flooding.

The cleanup is part of a broader government strategy to improve waste management, with plans for three new regional landfill sites to complement the activated transfer stations and reduce pressure on existing facilities.
