Ghana Vice President receives Democracy Cup to promote sports and democratic values
Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, presented the annual Democracy Cup to Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang at Jubilee House in Accra. The cup is a parliamentary initiative designed to use football as a platform to promote democratic values and national unity.
The presentation took place ahead of the Democracy Cup fixture between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium. During the ceremony, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that football and democracy share core principles, such as respecting rules, accepting outcomes, and prioritizing the collective good over individual interests.
She highlighted Ghana’s history of peaceful political transitions and credible elections but cautioned that these democratic achievements require continuous protection. She called on public officials to serve all citizens regardless of political affiliation and urged increased investment in grassroots sports to strengthen the nation's democratic fabric.
