Ghanaian expert urges deployment of imported buses amid rising transport fares

Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a Senior Fellow at Africa Policy Lens, has called on the Ghanaian government to deploy imported buses to the streets to help mitigate rising public transport costs. The demand comes as commuters face an 8% increase in transport fares, effective Saturday, September 26.

In April 2026, the government announced a plan to procure 300 29-seater buses for Metro Mass Transit (MMT) to expand capacity. While the first batch of 100 buses arrived from Egypt, Dr. Zaato noted that these vehicles appear to be stationary and unused. He questioned why the buses remain unassigned to the roads while passengers are burdened by higher costs, stating that mass public transport is essential for any level of economic development.
