NDC admits error in defending headmaster accused of sexual abuse

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has admitted to mishandling its initial response to sexual abuse allegations against Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey stated that the party acted prematurely in defending Abdulai, who also serves as the Juaben Constituency Secretary. The party had initially decided to support Abdulai after he denied the allegations and presented a Ghana Education Service report that cleared him. Kwetey noted that the party believed the accusations might be a politically motivated attempt to damage his reputation.

The party’s position shifted following the broadcast of an investigative documentary by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni. Kwetey acknowledged that the NDC should have waited for further evidence, specifically the documentary, before taking a formal position on the matter.
