Journalist safety and welfare in Ghana
Overview
In early November 2026, Ghanaian experts and officials addressed critical issues regarding the safety and economic stability of the press. Former Ghana Journalists Association President Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie called for stronger accountability mechanisms to protect journalists from intimidation and attacks, arguing that prompt investigations are necessary to prevent a culture of impunity.
Professor Audrey Gadzekpo of the University of Ghana highlighted that poor wages and insecure working conditions, including delayed salaries and lack of formal contracts, threaten journalistic quality and democratic accountability.
In response to these concerns, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation Samuel Nartey George pledged that the state would pursue those who attack journalists regardless of their affiliation. During the launch of the Model Safety of Journalists Policy, the minister noted that Ghana’s ranking in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index had improved to 39th out of 180 countries. He also raised concerns regarding the high volume of media outlets, characterizing the proliferation of certain politically and religiously affiliated stations as “media tyranny.”
