Ghanaian farmers demand compensation for Newmont mining project structures

The Concerned Farmers Association of Afrisipakrom, Terchire, Susuanso, and Adrobaa is demanding compensation for structures located on lands compulsorily acquired by the state in 2024. The acquisition was intended to facilitate Newmont’s Ahafo North mining project under Executive Instrument (E.I.) 273 of 2024.

Association Chairman John Mensah stated that the Land Valuation Division of the Lands Commission has yet to pay compensation for the properties of 21 members. The association has formally rejected a petition from Newmont to the Lands Commission that characterizes the structures as “speculative.”

Mr. Mensah argued that the structures are not speculative under the Land Act or mining laws, noting that they existed long before the planned expansion of Newmont’s operations. He emphasized that these properties were essential for farming and supporting the livelihoods of the affected families.
