Ghanaian land compensation disputes
Overview
Farmers in various regions of Ghana are demanding compensation for lost livelihoods and property due to state-led infrastructure and industrial projects.
In Akyem Asene, over 200 farmers have appealed to the government for redress following the destruction of cocoa, food crop, and oil palm farms for the Accra-Kumasi expressway project. The Ghana Highway Authority noted that an increase in the expressway width expanded the number of affected individuals, and some damaged farms have yet to be measured for assessment.
In the Ahafo North region, the Concerned Farmers Association of Afrisipakrom, Terchire, Susuanso, and Adrobaa is seeking compensation for structures on lands acquired for Newmont’s mining project. Association Chairman John Mensah stated that the Lands Commission has not yet paid 21 members, and the association has rejected claims by Newmont that the structures were “speculative.”
