Ghana seeks investor support at IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok
Ghanaian officials, led by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, are participating in the 2026 IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok. The delegation aims to consolidate recent macroeconomic gains and secure international investor support following the conclusion of a US$3 billion IMF bailout program. Ghana has transitioned to a Policy Coordination Instrument, shifting focus from direct financing to policy monitoring and reform implementation.
Economically, Ghana reported a significant fiscal deficit reduction from 8.1% of GDP in 2024 to 1.2% in 2025, alongside a decrease in the debt-to-GDP ratio to 48.8%. While the World Bank projects the deficit may widen to 2.2% in 2026 and 2.9% in 2027, analysts suggest the government may outperform these estimates through sustained revenue mobilization.
Domestically, Dr. Forson has introduced a ‘New Economy’ agenda designed to address structural weaknesses and unemployment. The initiative focuses on transforming the economy from exporting raw materials to local value addition in agriculture and mining, aiming to convert economic growth into sustainable jobs for youth and opportunities for small businesses.
