Ghanaian Minority boycotts South Africa evacuation briefing over GH₵50m spending

The Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has announced a boycott of a scheduled closed-door briefing regarding the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa. The protest is a demand for transparency concerning nearly GH₵50 million in public funds spent on the operation.

The evacuation, launched in response to xenophobic attacks in South Africa, reportedly involved the movement and reintegration of 1,964 Ghanaian nationals. While the Minority expressed support for the decision to protect citizens, they maintain that the government must fulfill its obligation to account for all expenditures.

A formal request for information was submitted under the Right to Information Act on August 17, seeking itemized records for flights, transportation, accommodation, feeding, medical services, and reintegration payments. Although the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the request on August 25, the Minority claims no detailed breakdown has been provided to date.
