Ghanaian MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong detained in Netherlands

Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong remains in Dutch custody following his arrest at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026. The detention follows an extradition request from the United States regarding allegations of romance scams and money laundering.

Majority Leader James Agalga stated he lacks specific details regarding the allegations but intends to visit Frimpong to hear directly from him. Agalga emphasized that the MP is presumed innocent until proven guilty and rejected calls to declare the parliamentary seat vacant while legal proceedings continue.

Two applications for bail have been unsuccessful. An extradition hearing is scheduled for November 18, 2026. Ghana’s diplomatic missions in The Hague and Brussels are providing consular assistance to the detained lawmaker.
