Ghanaian MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong remains in Dutch custody

Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, remains in detention in the Netherlands following the rejection of two bail applications. Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor confirmed that both the initial substantive application and a subsequent appeal were denied by Dutch judicial authorities.

Mr. Frimpong was arrested at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in May 2026 while transiting from Ghana. He is currently being held pending an extradition hearing scheduled for November 18, 2026, which will determine if he is to be transferred to the United States. The legal proceedings are reportedly linked to allegations of money laundering and romance scams, though these charges are yet to be determined by the courts.

Mr. Dafeamekpor clarified that contrary to widespread speculation, the lawmaker has not been transferred to the United States and remains in Amsterdam. Parliament is monitoring the situation closely as the legal process continues.
