Accra-Kumasi Expressway: Right-of-way cleared and funding secured
The Ghana government has reached a major milestone in the development of the 198.7-kilometre Accra-Kumasi Expressway. The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Engineers have completed the clearing of the right-of-way, covering 175.6 kilometres from Ablekuma to Sewua, finishing one week ahead of schedule. President John Dramani Mahama has directed the GAF 48 Engineer Regiment to serve as a major subcontractor for the project.
Financing for the project is being managed through domestic resources, with Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson assuring that the government will not use external loans. Currently, $2 billion has been secured in a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana, with the total funding expected to reach $4 billion by the end of 2026. The procurement process for contractors has commenced, with an Expression of Interest published in September 2026 and a selection process expected to conclude within four weeks.
The new six-lane expressway is designed to reduce the travel distance between Accra and Kumasi by nearly 70 kilometres, potentially cutting travel time from five to six hours down to approximately two hours at a recommended speed of 120 km/h. The design also includes provisions for a future railway line within the corridor. To recover taxpayer investment, the expressway will be operated as a commercial asset through Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, featuring electronic tolling systems.
