Ghanaian teachers face criticism over unpaid arrears and welfare disparities

The Ghanaian government is facing criticism over the treatment of teachers compared to traditional authorities. Following an announcement by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, that monthly allowances for Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers would increase by 150 percent—from GH¢1,200 to GH¢3,000—political figures have questioned the disparity in welfare attention.

Donald Brown Dzamashie of the Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG) highlighted unresolved issues facing educators, including promotion arrears, delays in negotiating conditions of service, and the non-implementation of deprived-area allowances. He argued that while traditional leaders are vital for culture and peace, teachers are essential for national development.

Additionally, commentator P. K. Sarpong criticized reported explanations from Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang regarding unpaid teacher arrears. Sarpong questioned the incentive for teachers to pursue professional development and promotion examinations if the government cites the large number of teachers as a reason for the inability to settle financial obligations.
