Ghana's Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim Extends Post‑Flood Clean‑Up

After the June 29 floods across Ghana, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim announced that the national clean‑up operation will continue beyond its first day.

The government has dispatched additional trucks—estimated at 40 to 60—and increased the number of waste‑collection tricycles from 400 to 600 to accelerate evacuation of debris and refuse. Ibrahim said the goal is to finish waste removal within a week and then move on to sweeping the streets.

He emphasized keeping transfer stations and landfill sites open free of charge so residents can bring out stored waste, warning that closing them before the next rains would cause rubbish to return to gutters. Ibrahim pledged personal involvement, even forgoing his Sunday church service to oversee the effort.

President John Mahama visited the Alajo site to receive updates and is expected to address broader sanitation and flood‑prevention measures.
