Ghana's National Film Authority issues fraud warning and faces criticism over film fund appeal

The National Film Authority (NFA) of Ghana issued a public advisory warning aspiring actors and filmmakers not to pay fees for auditions, stating that legitimate casting calls are free and urging verification of audition announcements to avoid fraudsters demanding money.

Ghanaian‑American filmmaker Leila Djansi subsequently criticised the NFA’s appeal for public donations to the Ghana Film Fund, arguing that the fund should be financed through investment mechanisms rather than charity. She called for structures such as competitive tax incentives and grants to attract foreign productions, citing U.S. state film‑credit models, and rejected reliance on platforms like YouTube as a sustainable industry solution.
