Challenges in the Ghanaian film industry

The Ghanaian film industry is facing various institutional and economic challenges. Initially, the National Film Authority (NFA) issued warnings regarding fraudulent audition fees, advising filmmakers and actors to verify casting calls to avoid scams. During this period, filmmaker Leila Djansi criticized the NFA’s approach to the Ghana Film Fund, arguing that the industry requires sustainable investment mechanisms, such as tax incentives and grants, rather than public donations or reliance on platforms like YouTube.

Subsequent concerns have shifted toward broadcasting practices and intellectual property. Veteran filmmaker Socrate Safo accused OBTV of allegedly broadcasting movies without proper copyright permissions, noting that religious broadcasting should not exempt stations from intellectual property laws. Additionally, actress and filmmaker Selassie Ibrahim criticized television stations for undermining local cinema by prioritizing foreign content, such as dubbed telenovelas, over local productions, suggesting that resources should be redirected to support domestic filmmakers.
