Ghana's NDPC Director‑General pushes sanitation as performance metric

At the 5th Multi‑Stakeholder Executive Breakfast on Sanitation, held on 23 June 2026 in Accra, Dr Audrey Smock Amoah, Director‑General of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), called on Ghanaians to take personal responsibility for improving sanitation. She announced that sanitation indicators will now be part of the performance contracts for all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and that 10 % of each assembly’s Common Fund is earmarked for environmental sanitation projects.

Dr Amoah highlighted the integration of sanitation actions into the 2026‑2029 Medium‑Term Development Plans, the role of Regional Coordinating Councils in monitoring implementation, and the need for strong civic engagement, accountability and behavioural change. She linked the reforms to Ghana’s broader WASH targets under the 2018‑2047 Infrastructure Plan, which aims for 95 % household access to safe sanitation and 99 % to piped water.
