Ghana's New Patriotic Party eyes 2028 win ahead of election

Aspiring national chairman Awentami Paul Afoko said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a unique chance to reclaim power in Ghana’s 2028 general election because the long‑standing incumbent president will not be on the ballot. He highlighted Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a well‑known, battle‑tested candidate who can be marketed effectively, drawing a parallel to the party’s 2016 victory over a sitting government.

Afoko stressed that unity is non‑negotiable, urging members to set aside personal differences. Speaking to regional executives, patrons and elders in the Volta, Oti and Eastern regions, he invoked his 3R agenda – Reunite, Rebuild, Recapture – and warned against emotional politics, likening it to a boxer’s tactics. He called for disciplined cooperation to turn the party’s “edge” into an electoral win.
