Ghana's New Patriotic Party faces contested internal elections

Incumbent General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua is under intense criticism within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after the party lost 49 parliamentary seats in the 2024 elections, its worst performance since 1996. An Apex Intelligence poll shows Kodua still leading with 48.3% support among delegates, but a large share rates the current leadership as average or poor. Former presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia publicly endorsed challenger known as “Sly,” adding a high‑profile dimension to the race.

At the constituency level, the Biakoye district in Ghana has seen 28 aspirants file nominations for a range of executive posts, including chairman, vice‑chairpersons, secretary, organisers and treasurer. Candidates promise to rebuild party structures and strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2028 general elections, reflecting renewed enthusiasm for the NPP’s prospects at the local level.
