Ghana's New Patriotic Party plans nationwide 'Democracy Under Attack' protest on Aug 6

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a nationwide demonstration titled “Democracy Under Attack” for Thursday, 6 August 2026. The protest will begin at 6 a.m. at the Supreme Court in Accra and conclude at Jubilee House, with parallel rallies planned in other regions.

NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye said the march is being organised in collaboration with other political parties, civil‑society groups, professional bodies, student and youth movements to defend Ghana’s democratic institutions. Party spokesperson Dennis Miracles Aboagye, who also represents former Vice‑President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, cited recent arrests of opposition figures, the detention of TikTok users and journalists, and what he described as a “romance” between the executive and the judiciary as evidence of a growing threat to democracy.

The government has rejected the accusations, maintaining that arrests and prosecutions follow due‑process law and that law‑enforcement agencies and the judiciary operate independently.
