Overview

In early August 2026 Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) announced a nationwide demonstration titled “Democracy Under Attack,” scheduled for 6 August. The rally began at 5 a.m. at a community centre opposite the Supreme Court in Accra, proceeded along Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel Road past the Efua Sutherland/Ridge roundabout and the Arko Adjei interchange, and concluded at the main entrance of Jubilee House. The party said the protest aimed to defend constitutional democracy, judicial independence and the rule of law, accusing the ruling National Democratic Congress of selective justice and political persecution.

On 6 August the march proceeded as planned. The NPP presented three petitions to the Chief Justice, President John Mahama and the Speaker of Parliament. Party officials—including General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin, Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed and others—called on all NPP aspirants in Greater Accra to suspend campaign activities on 5 and 6 August to mobilise support. They criticised the Presidency for sending junior staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah to receive the petitions, calling the move disrespectful; Jantuah responded that she holds a senior position and threatened to petition the Speaker over the perceived slight.

The NPP framed the protest as a constitutional appeal, urging civil‑society, labour, religious groups and the diplomatic community to join. Police were briefed under the Public Order Act. The party also highlighted broader concerns about arbitrary arrests, bail conditions and the removal of the Chief Justice, citing the alleged arrest of its Constituency Communications Officer Richard Nana Basoah. The opposition NDC dismissed the petitions as lacking substance. Media attention noted a male supporter dressed in women’s clothing during the demonstration.
