The New Patriotic Party (NPP) organised a nationwide demonstration on 6 August 2026 under the banner “Democracy Under Attack”. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin called for an end to “selective justice” and warned against a cycle of political retaliation. Presidential staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah, who received the NPP petition on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, rebuffed the leader’s remarks that she was a “nobody”, insisting she holds a senior government position and threatening to petition the Speaker over the perceived disrespect.

NPP officials, including Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed, argued the protest highlights systemic issues such as arbitrary arrests, bail conditions and the removal of the Chief Justice. The party urged civil society, labour, religious groups and the diplomatic community to join the rally, while the police were briefed under the Public Order Act. The opposition NDC dismissed the petition as lacking substance, but the NPP maintained the demonstration was a constitutional appeal to protect Ghana’s democratic institutions.
