Ghana's NPP ex‑chair Paul Afoko returns, seeks party leadership

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Afoko has announced his return to active politics and will contest the party’s national chairmanship ahead of the 2024 general election. Political science lecturer Dr Kwasi Amakye‑Boateng called the move an opportunity for reconciliation and regeneration within the NPP, saying Afoko’s willingness to forgive past disputes could help reunite disaffected members. Pollster Ben Ephson added that Afoko’s perceived neutrality and lack of factional baggage give him an edge over other contenders, noting his role in shaping policies that contributed to the party’s 2016 victory. Analysts suggest the contest will be fiercely competitive, with the outcome likely hinging on influential party figures rather than personal popularity.
