Ghana's UHAS opens AI Centre of Excellence as government urges AI adoption in universities

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) announced the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence during the International Conference on AI in Healthcare and Pharma in Ho. Vice‑Chancellor Professor Lydia Aziato said the centre will focus on research, clinical trials, drug development, health financing and training for health professionals, and will be integrated with the planned UHAS Medical Centre. She emphasized ethical standards, data privacy and collaboration with local and international partners, including the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development.

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku‑Agyemang called on Ghanaian universities to embed AI and digital literacy into curricula, promote interdisciplinary research and technology‑based entrepreneurship, and ensure responsible use of AI. Speaking at KAAF University’s graduation ceremony, she referenced the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and highlighted initiatives such as teacher housing to support rural education.
