Ghaziabad schools closed as heavy rain triggers alerts, child death

Heavy rainfall across Uttar Pradesh on July 10, 2026 prompted the District Magistrate to order the closure of all schools—from nursery to class 12—in Ghaziabad and nearby districts such as Meerut, Bulandshahr and Baghpat. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Ghaziabad, warning of strong thunderstorms, hail and intense rain, and a heavy‑rainfall warning for 75 districts in the state. The downpour caused widespread water‑logging, slowed traffic and disrupted daily life.

Amid the flooding, a three‑year‑old girl in Ghaziabad slipped and fell into an overflowing roadside drain and died on the spot. Her father, Sumit Kumar, said his daughter's foot slipped in the flood‑filled drain. The incident underscored the safety hazards accompanying the severe weather.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, advising residents to stay indoors, avoid water‑logged areas and remain alert to further weather warnings.
