Vietnamese authorities have seized over 1.1 tons of illegal ivory at Quy Nhon port. The haul consists of 221 pieces of elephant ivory, weighing a total of 1,193 kilograms.

The contraband was discovered during customs clearance, hidden inside hollowed-out sawn timber within three shipping containers. The shipment, which arrived at the port on July 9, originated from the Republic of the Congo.

In addition to the ivory, inspectors found 79.3 kilograms of bones from large cats, suspected to be tiger bones, which are often used in traditional medicine. A criminal investigation has been launched into the violation of regulations regarding protected wildlife. While this is the largest seizure ever recorded at Quy Nhon, it follows a history of massive wildlife smuggling operations through other Vietnamese ports.
