Vietnam traffic police to enforce safe following distances on expressways

Vietnam's Traffic Police Department has announced that starting August 27, 2026, authorities will begin strictly enforcing regulations regarding safe following distances on the Phap Van - Nghi Son expressway. This measure follows statistics showing that over 30% of serious accidents on this route are caused by drivers failing to maintain adequate distance from the vehicle ahead.

Under Circular 38/2024, drivers traveling at speeds above 60 km/h must maintain a minimum distance of 55 meters in favorable conditions. Violations that do not result in accidents can lead to fines of 4 to 6 million VND and a 2-point deduction from the driver's license. If a violation causes an accident, fines increase to 20–22 million VND with a 10-point license deduction.

In separate criminal developments, police in Gia Lai have indicted seven individuals for public disorder and illegal use of military weapons following a violent brawl in Xuan An. In Phu Tho, a driver has been charged with violating road traffic regulations after a semi-trailer collision resulted in a fatality. Additionally, authorities in Phu Tho arrested a man for fraud after he impersonated a company to illegally lease and sell 452 steel plates, totaling approximately 4.3 billion VND in losses.
