Gianluca Rocchi resigns from Italian Referees’ Association
Gianluca Rocchi, the former referee chief for Serie A and Serie B, has resigned from the Associazione Italiana Arbitri (AIA). The decision follows a conflict between his new media commitments and the association's regulatory constraints.
Rocchi has taken on a role as a regular television pundit and commentator for DAZN. AIA regulations impose strict limits on members regarding media exposure, specifically prohibiting public evaluations or stances on active colleagues without prior agreement. To maintain full freedom of commentary and avoid conflicts of interest, Rocchi chose to step down from his institutional role.
This resignation follows the conclusion of a recent investigation in which Rocchi had been cleared of alleged complicity in sporting fraud related to VAR interference. The criminal investigation was dropped, and the FIGC’s federal prosecutor also closed the sporting case after finding no evidence of direct contact between Rocchi and club officials.
