Gibraltar implements border changes and announces new affordable housing project

Following the removal of the border fence between La Línea de la Concepción and Gibraltar on July 15, local authorities report a period of adjustment. Mayor Juan Franco noted that while initial traffic difficulties occurred due to local festivities and new documentation requirements for goods, circulation has since improved. Officials are now looking toward September to assess the long-term impact on commercial activity and labor movement.

In a separate development, the Government of Gibraltar has announced a major urban project involving land reclamation in the Bay area. The project will create approximately 47,000 square meters of new land intended exclusively for affordable housing. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo confirmed that the development will provide roughly 2,300 homes, a significant increase from the 1,550 originally planned. The housing will be allocated through government programs, with specific provisions for pensioners to help free up larger public rental units for families.
