Gibraltar border and transport developments

Following the removal of the border fence between Gibraltar and La Línea de la Concepción in July, local authorities have reported a period of adjustment. While initial traffic difficulties arose due to new documentation requirements and local festivities, Mayor Juan Franco noted that circulation has since improved.

As Gibraltar prepares for aviation expansion, with airlines expressing interest in new flight connections to Europe by summer 2027, the government is addressing potential traffic increases. Transport Minister John Cortes confirmed that discussions are underway with the La Línea City Council to explore using approximately 9,000 parking spaces on the Spanish side for airport passengers.

Proposed transport strategies include promoting parking near the local stadium to encourage travelers to access Gibraltar via walking or public transport, as well as studying the implementation of a shuttle service from the Spanish side. Within Gibraltar, officials are also considering the construction of a multi-story parking structure at the current airport site.
