Gibraltar leaders reaffirm British sovereignty and self-determination rights
Gibraltar's leadership has reaffirmed the territory's stance on sovereignty and self-determination during a period of political transition. Outgoing Chief Minister Fabian Picardo addressed the United Nations Fourth Committee, challenging the institution to move beyond ritual and recognize Gibraltar's democratic rights. This address comes as Gibraltar approaches eighty years on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories.
In a separate address at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Joseph Garcia emphasized that Gibraltar's British sovereignty is non-negotiable. Garcia highlighted the importance of the new UK-EU Treaty, noting that while the agreement provides greater certainty for businesses and residents regarding frontier movement, it does not diminish British institutions or affect the territory's sovereignty. He noted that the treaty's text specifically protects Gibraltar's position.
