UK-Gibraltar sovereignty and treaty implementation
Overview
The United Kingdom and Gibraltar's leadership have reaffirmed their commitment to British sovereignty and the principle of self-determination.
In September, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed an ‘unshakeable commitment’ to Gibraltar, describing the territory as a vital part of the British family. He noted that a recently signed treaty between the UK and the European Union would provide greater certainty for citizens and businesses following years of effort.
By October, Gibraltar's leadership continued to emphasize these positions during a period of political transition. Outgoing Chief Minister Fabian Picardo addressed the United Nations Fourth Committee, calling for the recognition of Gibraltar’s democratic rights as the territory remains on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories. Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Joseph Garcia stated that British sovereignty is ‘non-negotiable’ and clarified that the UK-EU treaty protects Gibraltar’s position and does not diminish its British institutions.
