GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 enters implementation phase in Germany

The GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 project has entered its implementation phase in Germany. Located near the Jänschwalde lignite power plant close to Cottbus, the facility is set to become the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Europe.

Developed through a partnership between LEAG Clean Power and Fluence, the system will feature a capacity of 4,000 MWh and a power output of 1,000 MW. This configuration allows the battery to supply electricity for approximately four hours at maximum power, which could theoretically meet the consumption needs of roughly 1.6 million households.

Fluence is responsible for the design, supply, and construction of the project, utilizing a modular Smartstack system based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The installation will occupy approximately ten hectares of land southeast of the power plant.
