Gimpo FC embezzlement scandal prompts calls for special audit

Gimpo City Council member Jung Young-hye has called for a comprehensive special audit and a thorough police investigation following an embezzlement scandal involving an employee at Gimpo FC. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding failures in internal controls and financial oversight within the club.

Jung highlighted that an employee allegedly misappropriated billions of won over several years by providing false reports to superiors regarding short-term deposits. She questioned how the management, board of directors, and external auditors failed to detect such significant discrepancies. Jung emphasized that the club’s financial regulations, which require the separation of income and expenditure duties, were not effectively upheld.

In response, Jung has demanded a full comparison of all financial accounts, transaction records, and sponsorship contracts against original bank documents from 2023 to the present. She also urged Gimpo City to conduct a systemic review of all affiliated organizations to prevent similar occurrences and stressed that losses should not be covered by cutting player wages or reducing staff.
