Gimpo FC embezzlement scandal

An investigation by Gimpo City revealed that an employee at the K League 2 football club Gimpo FC embezzled over 8 billion won between 2023 and 2025. The suspect allegedly used false reports regarding deposits to hide the theft, using a portion of the funds to purchase luxury foreign vehicles and real estate in Japan.

In response to the scandal, Gimpo FC representative director Hong Kyung-ho offered to resign, though Gimpo City declined the resignation pending the full establishment of facts. Gimpo Mayor Lee Ki-hyung criticized the lack of management oversight and indicated the city would pursue criminal and civil liability.

Following these developments, Gimpo City Council member Jung Young-hye called for a comprehensive special audit and a thorough police investigation. Jung raised concerns regarding failures in internal controls and the club’s inability to uphold financial regulations requiring the separation of income and expenditure duties. She has demanded a full comparison of all financial accounts, transaction records, and sponsorship contracts against original bank documents from 2023 to the present, while urging a systemic review of all affiliated organizations.
