Ginger and coffee consumption effects on digestion

Research indicates that ginger can influence digestive processes, specifically by accelerating gastric emptying. A study published in the ‘European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology’ involving 24 healthy individuals found that consuming 1.2 grams of ginger resulted in the stomach emptying in approximately 13 minutes, compared to 27 minutes for those receiving a placebo. Similar effects regarding faster gastric emptying were observed in individuals with functional dyspepsia.

While ginger may aid digestion, certain food combinations with coffee can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. For sensitive individuals, consuming milk with coffee may lead to bloating and gas due to lactose intolerance. Citrus fruits, such as oranges or grapefruit, combined with coffee can increase acid secretion, potentially leading to heartburn. Additionally, consuming chocolate with coffee may exacerbate acid reflux, as both cocoa and caffeine can relax the muscle between the esophagus and the stomach, allowing acid to rise.
