Effects of ginger and coffee on digestion

Overview

Research published in the ‘European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology’ indicates that ginger consumption can influence digestive processes by accelerating gastric emptying. In a study of 24 healthy individuals, those consuming 1.2 grams of ginger in capsule form reached a half-empty stomach state in approximately 13 minutes, compared to 27 minutes for a placebo group. Similar acceleration was observed in individuals with functional dyspepsia.

While ginger shows potential for aiding gastric function, researchers clarified that these studies did not specifically test ground ginger added to coffee, nor did they conclude that ginger acts as a natural laxative or treats constipation.

Separate observations regarding coffee consumption note that certain combinations can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. For example, milk may cause bloating in lactose-intolerant individuals, citrus fruits can increase acid secretion leading to heartburn, and chocolate may exacerbate acid reflux due to the combined effects of cocoa and caffeine on the esophageal muscle.
