Ginger consumption may accelerate gastric emptying
Research published in the ‘European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology’ suggests that ginger can influence gastric function. In a study involving 24 healthy individuals, those who consumed 1.2 grams of ginger in capsule form experienced faster gastric emptying compared to a placebo group.
Specifically, the time required for the stomach to be half-empty was approximately 13 minutes after ginger consumption, whereas it took about 27 minutes for the placebo group. Similar effects were observed in individuals with functional dyspepsia, who also experienced accelerated gastric emptying.
While these findings indicate ginger's impact on the stomach, researchers note that these studies did not specifically test ground ginger added to coffee, nor did they conclude that ginger acts as a natural laxative or treats constipation, as gastric emptying and bowel movements are distinct physiological processes.
