Ginnie Mae mortgage portfolio exceeds $3 trillion

Ginnie Mae reported that its outstanding mortgage-backed securities portfolio reached $3.03 trillion in September 2026, an increase from $2.97 trillion in June. This milestone marks the program's first time exceeding the $3 trillion threshold at the close of a federal fiscal year.

In the broader mortgage sector, government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are implementing modernization efforts to reduce loan risks and consumer costs. Fannie Mae reported approximately $3 billion in consumer savings through midyear by utilizing alternative valuation methods for roughly 5.4 million loans.

Freddie Mac stated it has delivered nearly $3 billion in borrower savings since 2017 through appraisal waivers and property data report options. Both entities are also targeting title costs; Fannie Mae has introduced programs to waive lender title insurance requirements on eligible loans, estimating savings of $500 to $1,500 per loan for certain borrowers.
