Sicily political landscape shifts ahead of regional elections

Political activity in Sicily is intensifying ahead of upcoming regional elections. Giorgio Mulè, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies and Forza Italia deputy, has officially ruled out running for the presidency of the Sicilian Region. Speaking in Agrigento, Mulè expressed support for the current governor, Renato Schifani, stating that the administration has helped the region recover, though he emphasized that the final decision on a candidate rests with the center-right coalition.

On the center-left side, the Democratic Party (PD) is accelerating its internal discussions to define a presidential candidate. Regional secretary Anthony Barbagallo indicated that the party will intensify talks in the coming weeks and may resort to primaries if a consensus is not reached. Meanwhile, Ismaele La Vardera of the Controcorrente movement remains firm in his intention to run.

In legal news, a trial has commenced in Palermo involving regional tourism assessor Elvira Amata. She faces allegations regarding the exchange of illicit favors involving public funding and employment. The defense has listed several witnesses, including regional president Renato Schifani, for the proceedings.
