Giorgio Parisi says nuclear power covers only 20% of Italy's energy needs

During a hearing before the Senate’s Environment Committee, Nobel laureate physicist Giorgio Parisi argued that nuclear energy in Italy provides only electricity, accounting for roughly 22 % of the country's power output. He emphasized that this means nuclear power can address just a little more than one‑fifth of Italy’s overall energy consumption, which in 2024 totaled about 109 million tonnes of oil equivalent. Parisi highlighted that the majority of Italy’s energy use—about 41 % in buildings, 35 % in transport and 21 % in industry—relies on fuels other than electricity, underscoring the limited impact of nuclear on the national energy mix.
