George Gerapetritis addresses UN General Assembly and Columbia University

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis participated in the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, conducting a series of high-level diplomatic engagements. During his visit, Gerapetritis held meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Iran, Pakistan, and Bahrain, as well as Algeria, to discuss regional stability and the situation in the Middle East. He emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and the full restoration of maritime security and freedom of navigation, noting that instability in the region poses significant risks to global food and energy security.

Gerapetritis also delivered a speech at Columbia University titled ‘Between Power and Principles: Conducting Foreign Policy in a World in Transition.’ In his address, he warned that a global community lacking rules and principles risks becoming a ‘jungle,’ a development particularly dangerous for small and medium-sized states. He advocated for the preservation of multilateralism and international law as essential tools for addressing global crises, including those in Africa and the Sahel.

Ahead of Greece assuming the Presidency of the UN Security Council in October, Gerapetritis reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to promoting international law and multilateral cooperation. He highlighted that while political power is returning to the global stage, the need for cooperation is greater than ever to manage transnational challenges such as migration, climate change, and food insecurity.
