Giorgos Mazonakis death investigation and 40-day memorial

The judicial investigation into the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis, who died on September 9, 2026, at age 54, has entered a critical phase. Toxicology reports revealed eight substances in his system, including propofol, midazolam, and flumazenil. These findings have raised questions regarding the legality of medical procedures performed at a private clinic in Kolonaki, where Mazonakis was undergoing a blood treatment.

Two doctors, a husband and wife, remain in custody at Korydallos Prison. The female doctor is reportedly preparing a defense that challenges the nature of the procedure, claiming it was 'inusoferesis' rather than plasmapheresis, and citing the singer's pre-existing health conditions. Authorities have conducted multiple searches at the clinic on Karneadou Street to collect further evidence.

On October 18, 2026, a 40-day memorial service was held at the Holy Trinity Church in Nikaia, the singer's hometown. The event was attended by hundreds of fans, colleagues, and his grieving family, including his parents, Manolis and Kleio, and his sisters, Vaso and Maria. Following the service, a memorial ceremony took place at the Third Cemetery of Athens.
