Tributes follow the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis

Following the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis at age 54, various figures and groups within the Greek music and sports communities have paid tribute to his legacy.

Singer Giannis Vardis issued an emotional tribute on social media, sharing a video of a past performance. Vardis praised Mazonakis for breaking established stereotypes and patterns associated with the ‘laiko’ genre to create something entirely new, noting that the loss has deeply affected him.

In a public display of remembrance, actor Apostolos Gkletsos honored the singer by performing one of his hits, ‘Thelo na Giriso sta Palia’, at a barbershop in central Athens.

Mazonakis’s influence also extended to the sports world; supporters of the football club Atromitos displayed a banner during a Greek Cup match against PAOK. The banner utilized lyrics from his song ‘Gucci’ to honor the singer’s connection to the Western Attica region.

During a concert in Cyprus, Sakis Rouvas delivered an emotional farewell, reflecting on their parallel careers that began in 1991. Rouvas performed Mazonakis’s hit song ‘Aniko se mena’ as a final salute to his friend.
