Giorgos Siakantaris clarifies stance on political cooperation

Giorgos Siakantaris has issued a clarification following political backlash regarding his recent comments on the rise of the far-right in Europe. His initial remarks, prompted by political developments in Germany, were interpreted by some, including PASOK MP Panagiotis Doudonis, as an endorsement of a potential coalition between the Greek Left Sympolity (EL.A.S.), PASOK, and the governing New Democracy party.

Siakantaris denied that his post was an exhortation for EL.A.S. or PASOK to cooperate with New Democracy. He emphasized that his analysis was focused on the situation in Germany and other European nations facing far-right surges, noting that Greece is not currently in a similar position. While he maintains his support for EL.A.S., he asserted his right to political autonomy, stating that his personal views should not be viewed as the official line of the party or of Alexis Tsipras.

Despite the clarification, Siakantaris maintained a firm stance against the current government, stating that it “must be defeated and not remain in power through the back door.” He argued that if a situation arose in Greece where cooperation with New Democracy was necessary to prevent the far-right from gaining significant power, such cooperation should be considered rather than rejected outright.
