Gironde wildfire forces 220,000 evacuations as flames threaten Bordeaux FAST-MOVING
A massive wildfire ignited in the Gironde department of southwest France in mid‑July, near Saumos. The blaze has consumed roughly 42,000 ha of forest and scrubland – an area four times the size of Paris – and has generated a pyrocumulonimbus cloud, a fire‑generated thunderstorm not previously recorded in France.
Around 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel and about 1,200 police/gendarmes have been deployed, with more than 75 firefighters injured and 240 homes destroyed. Over 220,000 residents have been evacuated from the region, and additional evacuations in neighboring Spain bring the total number of people displaced in the wider area to well over 300,000.
The fire front is approximately 15 km from the outskirts of Bordeaux. Mayor Thomas Cazenave has said a city‑wide evacuation is not planned, while Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the situation as “very unfavorable” and warned of unpredictable wind behavior. The French Ministry of Armed Forces has deployed experts and resources to protect defence‑industry sites, including missile and powder factories, in the western Gironde. Partial closures of the A63 highway and suspension of rail services have been imposed, and an exhibition centre has been turned into an emergency shelter for thousands of evacuees.
