A massive wildfire near Bordeaux in the Gironde department has scorched roughly 42,000 hectares – the largest blaze in France since 1949 – and generated the country’s first recorded pyrocumulonimbus (fire‑storm) cloud. More than 3,300 firefighters, 24 aircraft, 1,700 soldiers and 1,400 police officers have been deployed to contain the fire, which at its peak forced about 220,000 people to evacuate. Tens of thousands have since been allowed to return, while authorities warn that an imminent heat wave and strong winds could reignite hotspots. Climate‑change attribution studies say such extreme fire‑weather conditions are now twice as likely in southwestern France and up to twenty times more likely in central Spain. Eleven individuals have been charged with arson or fire‑endangering offenses, linked to alleged spark‑causing work on power‑line clear‑cuts. The disaster has crippled the regional economy: roughly 39,000 businesses, including many wineries, report damage, and smoke plumes have drifted into Germany, Spain and Portugal, prompting health alerts. Local solidarity efforts have mobilised volunteers, donated supplies and provided emergency accommodation for displaced residents. Despite the scale of the response, officials stress that no fatalities have been recorded and that the fire remains “stabilised yet not under control”.
