The large wildfire burning across Gironde in southwestern France has been declared stabilized, with officials saying it is no longer advancing. Authorities reported multiple fire re‑ignitions on Tuesday – 14 separate spots on previously burned ground – and evacuated roughly 4,000 tourists from the Lacanau resort area as a precaution. Earlier evacuations had moved about 57,000 residents of three towns near Bordeaux, who are now allowed to return home if they wish.

The fire has consumed an estimated 42,000 hectares, destroyed more than 240 houses and forced the evacuation of around 220,000 people across 23 communes. Prefect Sophie Brocas, Mayor Laurent Peyrondet, Lieutenant‑colonel Éric Pitault of the departmental fire service, and commander Matthieu Jomain have all been involved in the response, while Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that the blaze had become “extremely virulent” and was generating its own weather phenomena.
