Sébastien Lecornu visits Gironde to launch wildfire reconstruction

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu visited the Gironde region on Monday to launch a reconstruction mission following devastating wildfires. The visit was met with hostility in Le Porge, where approximately 200 residents jeered and whistled at the Prime Minister. Residents expressed anger over the destruction of 183 homes and alleged that authorities prioritized protecting the affluent Cap-Ferret peninsula over local villages.

Lecornu defended the government's response, stating there is “strictly nothing to hide” regarding fire protection operations and dismissing claims of mismanagement as conspiracy-driven. He emphasized that tactical decisions were made locally rather than from Paris. The reconstruction effort is being supported by a state-led mission directed by Anne Coret.

In the Landes region, a separate fire that burned 1,700 hectares near Luglon has been declared “fixed,” allowing approximately 250 evacuated residents to return home. While the fire is contained, officials warned that it is not yet fully extinguished. The summer has seen record-breaking wildfire activity in France, with nearly 100,000 hectares burned across the country according to the Effis system.
