Gironde wildfire extinguished after burning 42,000 hectares
Authorities in southwestern France have announced that the massive wildfire in the Gironde department is now fully extinguished. The blaze, which began on July 22 near Sommes in the Landes de Gascogne forest, burned approximately 42,000 hectares of land.
The fire, described as a ‘firestorm,’ threatened tourist areas from Cap Ferret to the outskirts of Bordeaux. The emergency prompted a massive evacuation of roughly 224,000 people. While the fire was brought under control on August 1, smaller hotspots continued to smolder for several weeks.
This event is considered the largest wildfire in France since 1949. The response involved 3,300 firefighters working alongside the military, police, foresters, farmers, and volunteers, marking the largest firefighting operation in the modern history of the French Civil Protection. No human casualties were reported.
