Girondins Bordeaux to play in French sixth tier following financial sanctions

Six-time French football champion Girondins Bordeaux will compete in the sixth tier of French football this season. The decision was confirmed by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional league governing body.

The club's relegation follows financial sanctions imposed after it failed to meet funding requirements of approximately 10 million euros for the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 fiscal years, alongside unpaid debts. Recently, the club was acquired for a symbolic one euro by the American investment group Park Bench, which has committed to assuming the club's remaining debt.

New president Dominique Delport stated that the club is entering a period of recovery. A 12-year plan is scheduled for approval by a commercial court on October 20, which aims to reduce the club's debt from 26 million euros to 13 million euros. The current squad is largely amateur, though it may include up to five players on professional contracts, such as former Ligue 1 striker Baptiste Guillaume.
